Happiness by Zaka The Mystic
It is said that Happiness is a state of mind. But to understand this we need to understand what is MIND? Mind is nothing but a virtual energy present in all beings which is derived from various past and present experiences. Mind is the single most unstable thing in the world and it is even active when we take rest / sleep.
A search for happiness starts the moment the being comes into existence. For example the new born child is most comfortable and happy being with the warmth of it’s mother with whom it is bonded. The definition of happiness changes as per the referral changes on time vector. When child starts growing , it finds happiness in toys and other things. As the child grows it changes from clothes to things of comforts and pleasure to various possessions like money, house, car, social status etc. But what is the real happiness?? Can it be defined ever??
Happiness factor will come into existence once the basic minimal requirements of the being are taken care of like food, clothing and shelter. However what food, what clothing and what shelter is a million dollar question. This has also something to do with where and under what circumstances are we born, what have we inherited from our parents and what upbringing we have undergone. In reality one should be contented with stomach full of nutritious food, decent clothing and a roof on our head called HOME. But if we look around, there are people (which also include ourself) who are NOT contented with whatever things they have and they want to get MORE and BETTER and BETTER.
Will this desire of getting more and better ever bring contentment and happiness? Yes , to certain extent but there comes a time , on the way of achieving this goal of ours, which is very very subtle and if you are not extra sensitive and alert, may miss it, which signals the beginning of greed. The line is so thin and bleak that most of the time we do not realize that we have become greedy. Actually most of us enter the sphere of greediness unknowingly due to insure feeling which is deep within us. This insecure nature of being will make it more and more greedy and beginning of ENOUGH is not ENOUGH.
How do we fight the sense of insecurity to avoid greed?? One has to really start living within one’s means. Of course, efforts can be made towards betterment of prevalent conditions but if that does not happen then there should be no remorse. Insecurity is such a dangerous thing that how much ever you make yourself secure, it is not enough. The feeling of insecurity will start fading once you open your eyes and ears and observe lesser mortals and underprivileged. When you start giving to others irrespective of whether you have enough or not, then you will start experiencing the joy of giving and that moment starts fading of insecurity. What I means by giving is not only material/money/things/possessions , but even giving mental support to needy, counseling to deserving, grooming and advising youngsters etc. Many a times just a word of comfort will make lot of difference to people in trouble and which is more valuable than money. All humans want sense of belonging and bonding of some kind. Entire social fabric of mankind is based on bonding between humans. It starts with our own family to relatives to friends to neighbors to citizens to countrymen and finally to mankind.
When we give anything to others, that means in the first place we should have it. Forget the money or material things which we may have or may not have, however what stops us from giving love and compassion. The biggest known example in this world for such a thing is Jesus Christ and in recent times people like Mother Teresa to name a couple of them. Our own country India has a very rich heritage of such kings, Queens, Commoners, Sages, Yogis who have spread love and compassion without expectations in return. To begin with let us look at our own mother to has taken so much trouble for bringing us to this world and her love and affection for us is always selfless. She is been always giving us something till such time we grow up and become self sufficient. But How many of us has really first of all noticed and appreciated our own mother’s efforts to rear us to dignity?Have we ever expressed it to her by our deeds or words other than may be giving a expensive card or a phone call on mother’s day? In real sense, a warm hug or a word of gratitude will actually do magic than our expensive gifts and cards.
Let us now look at mother EARTH which has been ONLY giving us for last so many million years with supply of abundant air, water ,trees, land, minerals ,etc. But what have we done in return? Instead of cultivating and harnessing the resources provided by mother earth, we are destroying it under the name of industrialization and science growth. Rainforests are fast vanishing and so are the hundreds of animals which were an integral part of our earth’s ecosystem. None of us actually care a damn other than sending email messages to others on world environment day. We never realize that the root cause of all deceases is the man-created loss of balance in mother earth’s ecosystem. The singlemost virtue which we can learn from mother earth is GIVING.
When we see the world in such a perspective then a sight of a rainbow is a happiness, a raindrop on plant leaves is happiness, a beautiful morning Sun is a happiness, a glowing full Moon is a happiness. A real appreciative clap or a real compliment for someone or a beautiful painting can also bring happiness to you. Happiness can not be measured on any scale. It always brings cheer and smile to us and it is proven that it has a very positive effect on our health. The human body releases some hormones whenever you laugh and happy, which are very good for our health. When one is happy he will automatically make the surroundings happy.
One can rob us of all our material belongings however no one can deprive us of the right of being happy which does not cost anything and it is available in infinite abundant quantity.
